  • HUMORISM

    The Greek physician Hippocrates  (c. 460 – c. 370 BC) described the four temperaments as part of the ancient medical concept of humorism, that four bodily fluids affect human personality traits and behaviours.

    SANGUINE - blood (sanguis)
    PHLEGMATIC - phlegm
    MELANCHOLIC black bile (melas - "black" +  kholé“ - bile”)
    CHOLIRIC - yellow bile (kholé)

    Next, Galen (131-200 AD) developed the first typology of temperament in his dissertation De Temperamentis, and searched for physiological reasons for different behaviours in humans.
    In ‘The Canon of Medicine’, Avicenna (980-1037) then extended the theory of temperaments to encompass "emotional aspects, mental capacity, moral attitudes, self-awareness, movements and dreams.”
    Physician Nicholas Culpeper (1616–1654) disregarded the idea of fluids as defining human behaviour, and philosophers Maimonides (1135–1204) and Immanuel Kant (1724–1804), psychotherapist Alfred Adler(1879–1937), and physiologist Ivan Pavlov (1849–1936) all theorised on the four temperaments and greatly shaped our modern theories of temperament.
    Hans Eysenck (1916–1997) was one of the first psychologists to analyse personality differences using a psycho-statistical method (factor analysis), and his research led him to believe that temperament is biologically based.

    The four humors theory is also related to the classical elements of air, water, earth, and fire; as sanguine, phlegmatic, melancholic, and choleric, respectively. They made up a matrix of hot/cold and dry/wet taken from the Four Elements.

    Modern medical science does not define a fixed relationship between internal secretions and personality, and modern psychology is not much kinder to four temperaments concept and, in general, dismisses most personality theories altogether. Despite that, usage of terms — sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric, and melancholic — persists in both scientific and everyday language.
    However there are many new personality theories that were developed from this ancient concept, often disguised under different names.
    Dr. Helen Fisher’s personality types — Explorer, Negotiator, Director, and Builder — bear a striking resemblance to Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Choleric, and Melancholic respectively. Having said that, this doesn’t minimise the value of her original research.

    Although Jung’s (or Myer Briggs personality types) were based on a completely different typing system, description of their 16 types is very similar to four basic types

    • Phlegmatic - INFP
    • Choleric - ENTJ
    • Melancholic - ISTJ

  • DIRECTIONS

    Bath:

    1. Fill bath tub with WARM water.

    DON’T add salt at the beginning. Wait until the tub is full and ready to go, otherwise much of the essential oils will evaporate in the hot and moist environment.

    2. Jump into the tub and then add your desired amount of salt.

    3. Soak for at least 20 minutes to allow the ingredients to work their magic. Use crushed botanicals floating in your tub as a gentle body exfoliant.

    4. Drink water before, during, and after the bath.

    5. Rinse and towel dry. Wrap yourself in a towel or robe and keep warm. For the best result, relax and prepare for bed. Your body is primed for sleep during the cool-down period, and a good night’s rest is the ultimate remedy for all!

    CAUTION: Hot or warm baths should be avoided by people with certain medical conditions, except on the advice of a physician (including pregnant or breastfeeding women).

    Keep out of reach of children.

    Don’t have a bath tub? Don’t fear!Because each foot contains over 7,000 nerve endings and connections to the rest of the body, regular foot soaks have impressive benefits for your entire wellbeing.

    1. Dissolve 2-3 tablespoons of the formula in a bowl of warm water.

    2. Soak for 20 minutes.

    3. Finish with cold rinse.
